Facts about Network Marketing

Author: Kent Leach

  • Less than 1 out of 1000 people in this industry will ever make 6-figures.

  • 90% of all business WILL fail within their first 5 years (Entrepreneur Magazine)
  • Over 30 Million (yes million) Americans have either attempted Network Marketing or are currently involved in the industry.
  • Yet 90% make less than $10 a week.  WHY! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING? Why does everyone think this is an industry of easy-riches when the reality is that most are failing dismally?

network marketingSo why are so many network marketers struggling to get their businesses profitable? In my opinion, it all boils down to one reason.  Most of them are listening to what their upline is telling them to do.  They are using a system.  Every company has a system, and these systems will work.  These systems are based on the law of averages. If you run 10 people through a system, typically 1 or 2 will sign up.

So most marketers have decent success when they first get started.  A new marketer may only get 1 sale out of 15, but a sale is a sale.  If a marketer can continue to run people through the system, he or she will get better and their success ratio will improve.  That’s when you see 2-3 sales out of 10 showings.  Even the best in the business top out at about 3/10.

The problem starts when you’ve run through about every person you know and your list is starting to dry up.  If you call your upline, they will typically tell you that there’s always someone else and your list should never end, but give you little advice on real ways to add people to your list.  This is a pivotal time in a network marketer’s young business. A decision must be made, and most decide to quit.  The few who press on decide to purchase leads or start cold calling the phone book.  I admire these people because they have what it takes.  They just haven’t found the right system.

A few months ago, we were at the same crossroads described above.  We had a decision to make as well.  Whenever I have a decision to make, I want to be educated on my options.  My research lead to me to online marketing and how my network marketing business could be enhanced with online strategies.  A system existed that could seamlessly merge the two together.  The system was MLSP.  To learn more about how MLSP has changed our business, click HERE for a free presentation.

Direct Selling- 4 Top Ways It Can Help People Weather a Bad Economy

direct sellingDirect selling is a marketing channel of direct distribution for products and services directly to consumers without the shipping of products to conventional retail outlets.

According to the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA) the Direct Selling (DSA) Industry was responsible for over $28 billion in retail sales in the United States and over $114 billion in retail sales worldwide in 2009. That number continues to grow each year. The direct selling sector is a huge engine of economic growth in the US. According to numbers reported by the DSA, more than 50% of American adults report having purchased services or goods from a direct selling representative. Additionally, one in five American adults claim they have been or currently are working as a direct seller. With more than 62 million sales associates connected with direct selling companies worldwide, the direct selling (network marketing) industry is dynamic and growing not only locally but on a global scale. Here are a couple reasons why direct selling is taking off:

1. Earn Extra Income

Direct selling can be a great way to earn some extra money as a supplemental income, or perhaps fund college savings, and retirement. Like any job, particularly in sales, so it is work. It’s not like you sign up and then all of a sudden checks start rolling in. You have to hold parties, demonstrate the products, and one-on-one selling which is the most popular technique for making product sales. But, while all direct sellers make money on the difference between retail and wholesale product prices, most direct-sales companies also have a commission structure that rewards the “downline” recruitment of additional salespeople into their system. This gives the direct seller an opportunity to expand his/her business as well as give others the same opportunity.

According to the Direct Selling Association, the median income for direct sellers is a modest $2,400 a year. It’s enough to pay that extra bill, take that vacation or buy better holiday presents. Although some sales representative do earn tidy incomes, most use direct selling as a part-time supplement income.

2. Start A New Career

In 2009 the industry hit an all-time high of about 16.1 million Americans were direct sales representatives, according to the Direct Selling Association and with only 7.5 percent involved doing it full time with more than three-quarters being women. With employers watching their budgets more so than ever because of the bad economy, employees incomes as well as job opportunities have been stagnant. Nowadays, Americans more than ever are trying to make ends meet by turning to direct selling. More professionals today have entered the arena from doctors, attorneys, executives and many more have become instant entrepreneurs in the direct selling industry.

3. Start Your Own Business

Anyone can do it. There are no required levels of education, experience, financial resources or physical condition. People of all ages and from all backgrounds have succeeded in direct selling. Direct sellers are independent contractors. You’re your own boss, which means you can:

  • Business Ownership-Own a business of your own Boss and call your own shots.
  • No Caps on Earning Potential- Earn what you are truly worth. You can earn as much as you want in proportion to your own efforts. The level of success you can achieve is limited only by your commitment and willingness to work hard.
  • Goal Setting-Set your own goals and determine yourself how to reach them.
  • Easy Start Up & Exit Strategy-Start your business with very little or no capital investment. Plus, it’s a business that’s easy entry and easy exit unlike traditional businesses.

4. Work flexibility

You choose when and how much you want to work either part-time or full-time. According to the DSA , some 5.1 million Americans were involved in some form of direct sales in 1991, up from 4.7 million in 1990. Furthermore, 89% of direct sellers do sales work only part-time, which means they either are homemakers or have other jobs with women accounting for 90% of all sellers.  Many direct sellers are attracted by the flexibility of work hours but also by the opportunity to develop personal business connections.

Direct selling has helped many people in the US and across the world supplement their incomes as well as replace it in many cases. According to San Francisco Times, one lady of Brentwood started selling sweets last year by holding house parties with tastings of drinks, candy, cupcakes and other goodies. With her husband’s computer business struggling this has been a blessing for them.

She gives four or five parties a month, and works about 10 hours a week and nets $500 to $625 a month in sales. In addition to that she makes another $100 or $150 a month on commissions from sales generated by new reps she recruited. She claims, “It’s helped us out tremendously.”

So is Direct Selling for YOU?

Well that all depends on your ambition and ability to discard the hype and find a genuine business opportunity. So how about it… Is direct selling for you? Will you allow yourself to be successful? Perhaps be the next Direct Selling Icon? Business is all about timing and there is no better time now to be in the direct sales industry..

Ready To Start A Home Based Business?

work from homeSo, you want to start a home based business. Well, you are certainly not alone. Millions of individuals scour the internet every month searching for legitimate home based businesses with the dream of making it big and leaving their jobs. Every day, someone is thinking, “There must be a better way,” or “Please help me quit my job,” or “I want to work from home.”

Today, many people are afraid. They are fearful of their economic futures, and the term, “This Economy” is spoken everywhere, and not in a positive light. What this means is that there are a lot of people struggling to make ends meet.

Many are hoping for an economic miracle. Others have decided to start a home based business to help improve their situation.

Before you act on the impulse to start a home based business, there are a few things to consider. Let’s examine two major “red flags” indicating that you are NOT ready to venture into the world of the home based business entrepreneur – and what you can do to change the situation.

Red Flag #1: You feel desperate. You don’t make enough money. Perhaps you hate your job, and you’ll do anything to leave your current job situation. Or, you may be afraid you are about to lose your job.

Why this indicates that you are not ready: If you are feeling desperate and miserable, this is not a good time to start a home based business because you will carry that feeling of desperation into your search for a legitimate home based business opportunity. And instead of calmly weighing the pros and cons of various serious and profitable opportunities, You will be more likely to act out of desperation, falling for “get rich quick” scams – probably more than one – and spending your already hard-earned money on something that you feel will be a quick fix to your situation – that “magic bullet” that, frankly, does not exist.

How to change the situation: The first thing to do is calm yourself, and look at where the feelings of desperation come from. What can you change in your own attitude to make your job more bearable while you search for a profitable home based business? Instead of feeling angry and desperate, can you teach yourself to see the positive in your situation?

For example, if you already have a job – even if it’s not a great job – you could be thankful that you have a source of income that can help you save up for the right opportunity. You could sit yourself down and take full responsibility for where you are – after all, you made the decisions that led you to where you are now, and you can now make decisions to take another direction, if you choose. Just do it rationally, and without emotion.

Release your feelings of desperation and hate – those feelings are not who you are. You are a lot bigger than that! There are plenty of places online to learn the techniques that can help you change your own outlook. Use search terms like “self development resources” or “self development techniques,” etc.

Red Flag #2: You are broke. You have debts you cannot pay, and you think that if only you could start a home based business, that this will cure everything.

Why this indicates that you are not ready: I don’t care whether you think you’ve found the Holy Grail of home based businesses. If you are already in deep debt, you will go further into debt. Why? Because being in business for yourself costs money.

Even if you have a paying job, and just want to start something on the side to help pay your debts, if you are unable to stay current with your payments, you will not be able to get the credit or financing that you might need to get your home based business off the ground.

Running a business costs far more than the “5 to 10 hours per week” that so many business opportunities tout as being all that’s necessary to succeed. Scheduling your time commitment is only one part of the equation. You need to schedule your money commitment (aka “budget”) too.

How to change the situation: First of all, understand at the get-go that if you intend to start a home based business, you WILL need to spend money. Stop searching for “free home based business opportunities,” or “easy home based business,” and get real. You don’t get anything for nothing. Ever.

So, before you decide to jump into a home based business, decide how much you can save for your start up costs which will undoubtedly include advertising, website hosting fees, months of carrying your business before the search engines begin to recognize you, and qualified buyers begin to find and visit your website.

If you are truly passionate about starting a home based business, then you will do what it takes to pay down your debts and begin to formulate a logical plan to undertake a serious home based business venture. Until that day, you are not ready.

Depending on the type of home based business opportunity you are looking at, you can probably find others who are already active in the opportunity what type of budget is necessary to maintain the effort until you begin to earn profits.

Finally, you may be saying, “But, I really AM passionate about starting a home based business! Where can I get the money?”

This oft-asked question has a relatively simple answer – but unless you have the strength, determination, and self-discipline to do this, you won’t do it. And this is where the rubber meets the road.

Here is the answer (drum roll please): Sell your stuff. Get rid of it. Sell on eBay. Sell on CraigsList. Have a yard sale – have more than one yard sale. Just sell your stuff. Most people have far more stuff than they need. Do you REALLY need 10 pairs of shoes? How about that (Heaven forbid), that “Wii” you just had to have? How about your collection of collectible bears, NASCAR, purses, Goth skulls, or electronic do-dads?

How badly do you want to start a home based business? How badly do you want success? Sell the TV – or at least one of them (it’s a huge time waster anyway).

Sell the 4×4 SUV that you really don’t need to begin with. If you have kids, get them on board with you – kids are great dreamers and the thought of better stuff might nudge them in the right direction.

What else can you do? Stop spending needlessly. Buy your clothes from thrift stores instead of the department store for a while. One person we know plans “treasure hunting” trips to thrift stores with her kids – it has become a fun game, not a deprivation.

Do you really need that new handbag? Do you really need that piece of jewelry? Brand name versus generic? And on, and on…

If the last few paragraphs offend you, and you cannot bear to 1) part with your stuff and/or 2) stop buying more stuff in order to realize a dream, then you are not passionate about starting a serious home based business opportunity. That’s just the way it is.

But… If you felt your heart begin to pound just a little when you thought about possibilities instead of limitations, if you felt hope instead of desperation, faith instead of fear – then, my friend, you WILL find a way – not only to START a home based business, but SUCCEED.

Save Money

There are many people these days taking coupon classes who are saving lot of money with this method.
I’ve heard stories of people having a large bill, over $100, but paying only $20 or $30 for the entire
order!! That’s awesome and I applaud anyone that can get that much stuff for free! The problem with
this method for me is I don’t have room to store 20 bottles of Windex or cans of beans, even if I got
them free. Also, you have to be careful using coupons that save you a certain amount if you buy two or
more of an item, especially if it is for a brand name product (like coupons you find in the newspaper,
etc). I have personally found that often times you are better off buying the generic version of the
product instead of the brand name. All of the grocery stores, including Wal-Mart and Target, have their
own brands of most items, and most of the time, they are just as good as the name brand item. I would
rather save $1.00 by buying one of the generic items, rather than save 35 cents by buying two of the
name brand. If I don’t like the generic product then I know not to ever buy it again. Honestly, there have
only been three or four generic items I’ve bought the last three or four years that I thought were terrible
and will never buy again. To each his own, and we all have to do what makes sense for our families.
